Making Your Loft More Accessible
12th May 2023
When you have limited space in your home, it's important to make the most out of what you do have and one area that is too often overlooked is the loft. Lofts play an essential role in a home’s storage, but when properly cared for, and when time and effort are put into deciding how best to use your loft space, who knows what this underappreciated area of your home could become! At Rapid Access, our range of loft access doors and hatches are insulated and fire rated, these ensure that the space is sufficiently draught-proofed and that security is assured, so there’s all the more reason to make the most out of your loft! The following are some of the best ways to make sure that you are not wasting this great space.
Plan your space
First and foremost, as with any home project, is to plan; think about what you want to use the space for and what kind of furniture or equipment you'll need. Measure the space carefully, draw up a plan, make a mind map or just think it through and imagine your dream loft into existence. This will help you get a sense of what's possible and what's perhaps less realistic, but putting the thought in will help you to realise your vision.
Install a loft ladder or stairs
The next step is to install a ladder or stairs to access the loft – and this one we can help you with; our loft access hatch fitted with a loft ladder is the (safe and stable) bridge between you and your loft, so there’s no need to worry about getting in and out, and with the option to travel up there, there’s no excuse not to be using the space!
Choose the right flooring
When it comes to loft flooring, you have several options. The easiest and most affordable option is to lay down some chipboard or plywood. This will provide a stable surface for walking on. Another option is to install carpet or laminate flooring, which will give the space a more homely and complete look – particularly good if you want the area for more than just storage.
Add insulation
If your loft is not insulated, it's important to add insulation to keep the space warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This will also help to reduce your energy bills. As we mentioned, our loft hatches are insulated (and safety tested) for just this reason, and this can make all the difference whether you’re using the space for storage, living or just for fun, an insulated loft is a useful loft.
Consider lighting
Lighting is another important factor to consider when making your loft accessible. If you have a skylight or window, you may not need to install additional lighting. However, if the space is dark or doesn't have any natural light, you might want to add something to brighten the place up, rather than relying on a torch or phone light up there. With lights installed, the space becomes a real room as opposed to simply an area in the house; overhead lighting or lamps can make all the difference when creating a welcoming and homely environment out of your loft.
Furnish the space
Once you've made your loft accessible, it's time to furnish the space. Think about what you want to use the space for and choose furniture and equipment accordingly. A loft can make a great home office, guest room, or playroom. Make sure to choose furniture that fits the space and complements the environment that you’re trying to create up there. Just make it your own, you own it after all!
